Dear Mochy,
My name is Tjodolf Sommestad and I am the Operations Director of Jadestone Group AB. It is my role and responsibility to take care of all of our live services with specific attention paid to stability and access for our end users. I have been talking with my colleague Marcus Dahlgren and I understand that we had some stability and access problems this past Saturday with the online qualifiers for the Japan Open that you hosted. That is very disappointing to hear. And the depth of the problems, with I believe 4 local players suffering issues from a field of 20, is highly unusual for us.
We have investigated the issues that were incurred on Saturday with the qualifiers, but we cannot find any detailed information that would help us to pin-point the reason for the problems with this tournament. I want to underline that your event was the first time that we have actively promoted any of live gaming services in Japan. Also, that there are certain bandwidth / connectivity / PC set-up configurations that we recommend to be in place for all players of our games for them to guarantee the best possible experience. This is important because we have seen issues in the past where players have lost connections, timed out etc during games because of local issues with their ‘infrastructure Eand / or their PC. The recommended set-up and other recommendations are as follows:
<!--[if !supportLists]-->- Use browsers IE7 or Firefox 3. Avoid IE8 since there has been some problems reported with that browser.
- Aviod having many tables open. Each open table consumes computer memory which can lead to disconnect problems.
- Have as few browser windows and tabs open as possible. Each window or tab consumes memory and can lead to disconnect problems.
- Close down any other software while playing, including consider temporarily stopping any anti-virus software. These programs consumes computer memory and could lead to disconnect problems.
- Avoid using wireless Internet connections. They tend to be unstable which can cause problems. The bandwidth is not of extreme importance, it is more important that the connection to Internet is reliable.
- Do not close down the window that opens automatically when you proceed to the next stage in a tournament since this window will not automatically reopen when the game starts. Instead, wait with the window open until the opponent is seated.
- In the main lobby, preferably have tab Tournaments selected when playing a game. If you have the Single Games tab selected there are much more table information regarding the open games in the lobby list that will be sent back and forth between the client and the server, which potentially could cause problems for the actual game being played.
Can I suggest that you make these recommendations clear to any of your friends in the Japanese backgammon community that want to play with you and with the WSOB? By making these clear and open we may be able to reduce stability and access issues in the future. That would be very welcome for all of us of course.
