Right now he gets a lot of it because the weather is spectacularly crappy where I live, but even so he put the iPad aside on his own accord to play with his cars and other toys precisely (I think) because he knows I won take it away based on some arbitrary time limit. My only rules are that he cannot whine about it when I say it time to put the device away (for instance, when it time to leave) and no screens when it time to eat.
